Frequently Asked Questions

At W5 Technologies, we know that defense contractors and government agencies often have detailed questions about Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) and how our solutions support mission-critical communications. This FAQ page provides clear answers about MUOS, our technology, and how W5 Technologies makes advanced SATCOM development more accessible and effective

MUOS stands for Mobile User Objective System, a next-generation narrowband military satellite communications system. It provides secure, high-quality voice and data communication for defense operations worldwide. For defense contractors, MUOS compatibility ensures that communications systems can integrate with government standards and meet mission-critical requirements.

SATCOM is a broad term that refers to satellite communications in general—any system that uses satellites to relay voice, data, or video signals between users. It includes a wide range of commercial and military networks operating on different frequency bands and using various technologies.

MUOS (Mobile User Objective System), by contrast, is a specific U.S. Department of Defense narrowband SATCOM system. It’s a secure, globally available, beyond-line-of-sight communications network designed to replace and enhance the legacy UHF SATCOM system.

For defense contractors, MUOS is more than just a communications standard — it is a requirement for mission readiness. Ensuring that systems are MUOS-compatible allows contractors to compete for contracts, reduce testing delays, and deliver solutions that meet U.S. military specifications. W5Tech supports this need with its Mighty MUOOS™, a diagnostic tool that enables engineers to troubleshoot their radios and systems for MUOS compatibility inside their own labs.

W5Tech does not provide external labs. Instead, our featured product, Mighty MUOOS™, is designed to be used in laboratories and development environments. It gives contractors and engineers the ability to troubleshoot their equipment against MUOS standards, diagnose where systems may fail, and validate functionality before connecting to the restricted MUOS satellite network.

Mighty MUOOS™ is the ONLY off-satellite solution for MUOS troubleshooting. The Mobile User Objective Orientation System or Mighty MUOOS™ (pronounced Moose) enables organizations to achieve their MUOS objectives. From integrating terminals in aircraft to building your next communication gateway, Mighty MUOOS™ is the efficient and economical solution.

Mighty MUOOS™ saves time and money in the fact that all troubleshooting is done in your own lab and you do not have to travel to Scottsdale or San Diego to test. You can test in your own lab with your own team (grow knowledge) and test as long as you want. W5 provides MUOS expert support to help move you forward. The labs are costly and do not come with MUOS Support. Additionally, the labs will be closed for several months in 2026 which will leave the Mighty MUOOS™ as the only solution to test not on a live system. You save on travel costs, not having to travel to try something new, and not having to rent lab space.

In 2026, the main government MUOS test facilities in Scottsdale and San Diego will be closed for several months. That means defense contractors and system developers won’t have access to the traditional labs they rely on for MUOS SATCOM testing. W5 Technologies solves this challenge with the Mighty MUOOS™ — a portable, MUOS-compatible solution that brings the testing capability directly into your own lab. Instead of waiting for government facilities to reopen or spending money on travel and lab rentals, contractors can keep projects moving forward by testing in-house with their own teams. With W5’s expert MUOS support, you gain the same troubleshooting insights as a government lab, without the delays or added costs.

Mighty MUOOS™ is the only portable MUOS-compatible system available to defense contractors and agencies. It provides the same troubleshooting insights you would get from a government lab — but without travel, lab rental fees, or schedule delays. You can:

  • Test as long as you want without time restrictions
  • Save travel costs by testing locally instead of flying to Scottsdale or San Diego
  • Grow in-house expertise since your own engineers run the tests
  • Receive expert MUOS support from W5 (labs do not provide this service)

No. End users are not permitted to test directly on the MUOS satellite system. Mighty MUOOS™ simulates and diagnoses issues so you can validate and troubleshoot before ever connecting to the live network.

The Mighty MUOSe™ Mobile User Objective System Extender) is a payload designed to provide persistent MUOS service coverage from Low Earth Orbit (LEO). It enables reliable, secure communications when geostationary (GEO) MUOS satellites are unavailable, compromised, or unable to support a given region or mission profile.

While MUOS operates through geostationary satellites, those satellites can experience coverage limitations or vulnerabilities due to line-of-sight obstructions, terrain, or contested space conditions. Mighty MUOSe™ ensures continued MUOS access by extending the network through LEO-based payloads that maintain connectivity in environments where GEO access is reduced or unavailable.

Mighty MUOSe™ is needed in locations where geostationary (GEO) satellite coverage is unavailable or unreliable, such as polar regions, mountainous areas, and other remote or obstructed environments. It provides critical MUOS connectivity in denied, degraded, or hard-to-reach regions where maintaining secure, reliable communication is essential.

Mighty MUOSe™ is compatible with a variety of small and agile platforms—including CubeSats, small satellites, and high-altitude platforms—providing flexibility to extend MUOS coverage without the need for large satellite buses or fixed ground stations.

The  Mighty MUOSe™ prototype has completed laboratory validation, including thermal vacuum, shock, and vibration testing, and has demonstrated point-to-network call capability under worst-case Doppler conditions. The system is ready for integration into operational platforms.

Yes. Mighty MUOSe™ is fully compatible with MUOS Mil-Std certified terminals. It automatically pre-corrects for Doppler shifts to allow standard MUOS terminals to function properly in LEO.

The Mighty MEG™ (MUOS Extension Gateway) is purpose-built to solve a critical communications challenge: providing real-time, secure access between MUOS terminals and external networks across all MUOS call types—Point-to-Point (PTP), Point-to-Network (PTN), and Group.

Whether you’re conducting UAV command and control, delivering real-time intelligence to units in radio silence (EMCON), or distributing battlefield situational awareness data, the Mighty MEG™ bridges the gap between internal MUOS networks and the external networks that operators, analysts, and mission leaders depend on.

Mighty MUOOS is a laboratory-based emulator and simulator for the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) network. It is used for system development, testing, validation and training purposes — it allows engineers and developers to replicate MUOS network behavior in a controlled environment before live satellite connectivity.

Mighty MUOSe is a space-based extender payload designed for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) deployment. It delivers persistent MUOS coverage in environments where geostationary satellites are limited—such as contested, remote or high-latitude regions.

Mighty MEG is an extension gateway between MUOS terminals and external networks. It enables secure, real-time connectivity across MUOS call types (Point-to-Point, Point-to-Network, and Group) between MUOS and external systems (e.g., SIPRNET/NIPRNET or field mission networks).

In summary: MUOOS™ supports testing and validation, MUOSe™ supports operational extension of MUOS coverage, and MEG™ supports interfacing MUOS with external networks.

Security is at the core of everything we do. Mighty MUOOS™ is designed to meet the strict security standards of military and defense applications, ensuring sensitive projects remain fully protected throughout the diagnostic process.

Testing directly on the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) network isn’t permitted until your equipment is fully functional and certified. That means defense contractors must ensure their systems are MUOS-ready before government evaluation — and that’s where troubleshooting tools like Mighty MUOOS™ make all the difference.

W5 Technologies’ Mighty MUOOS™ was designed specifically for this stage of development. Instead of connecting unproven hardware or software to the live MUOS satellite network — which could interfere with mission-critical transmissions — Mighty MUOOS™ allows you to simulate and diagnose MUOS communication performance in a controlled environment.

The solution is in-house MUOS testing with W5 Technologies’ Mighty MUOOS™. Instead of waiting for lab schedules to reopen, contractors can test in their own labs with their own teams. This keeps projects moving forward without interruption.

Since end users cannot test directly on the MUOS satellite system, Mighty MUOOS™ provides a simulated diagnostic environment within customer labs. Engineers can use it to troubleshoot and confirm their systems’ functionality before submitting them for government validation, removing bottlenecks caused by lab scheduling or travel.

W5 Technologies stands apart by offering a diagnostic products rather than requiring access to government test facilities. Our Mighty MUOOS™ enables:

  • Faster readiness for defense contractors and military users.
  • Early troubleshooting of MUOS radios and systems.
  • Verification of MUOS compatibility before deployment.
  • Reduced dependency on restricted-access government labs.

We work closely with:

  • DOD/Government officials navigating complex procurement timelines
  • Small Business and Large Prime Technical teams sourcing mission-critical hardware
  • Decision-makers responsible for securing communications infrastructure that works the first time

Not completely. Government labs remain essential for final validation. However, Mighty MUOOS™ serves as a complementary solution, allowing contractors to identify and resolve issues internally before presenting systems for official approval. This reduces delays and increases the likelihood of passing government testing on the first attempt.
